ISPO SHANGHAI 2026, the Asian summer sports goods and fashion trade show, concluded its three-day run at the Shanghai New International Expo Center on July 5. The event brought together nearly 500 sports and outdoor brands from 20 countries and regions, spanning 30,000 square meters of exhibition space, and attracted over 26,000 trade visitors and sports enthusiasts from 99 countries and regions.

Product Innovation: From Technical Specs to Scenario-Based Design

Product competition at this year’s show reflected a shift from technical parameter comparisons toward solutions tailored to real-world usage scenarios. The Functional Textiles Trend Awards (Textrends) showcased advanced functional fabrics and material innovations, with BEST PRODUCT winners recognized for technical achievements in functional textiles.

The ISPO CHOICE China Market selection, evaluated over two days by an expert jury, athlete reviewers, and trade visitors, produced a TOP 10 WINNER list based on five assessment dimensions, serving as a reference for both procurement and consumer markets.

New brands entered niche categories including high-altitude mountaineering, long-distance trail running, single-day hiking, weekend outings, and urban commuting. Lightweight materials, protective features, and scenario adaptability emerged as key competitive differentiators in mountain outdoor products.

Demographic Expansion: Women, Children, and Pets

The exhibition demonstrated broader demographic coverage compared to previous editions.

The women’s sports segment moved beyond surface-level marketing toward function-driven product design. The “Women in Motion Lab” theme addressed specific needs such as support stability, cycle adaptation, and load-bearing storage for female athletes.

The children’s outdoor section featured specialized equipment brands, scenario-based experiences, and a floorball championship event, creating a platform for family-oriented outdoor engagement.

Pet outdoor emerged as one of the most closely watched new categories. The exhibition showcased pet-friendly outdoor travel brands, pet hiking clubs, trail running events with pets, pet-friendly campsites, and outdoor theme parks. A dedicated forum, “Companions in the Wild,” brought together stakeholders across equipment, community, and event sectors, reflecting the formation of a pet outdoor ecosystem.

Sustainability: From Concept to Industry Standards

Sustainability appeared as a through-line across exhibition zones and forum discussions.

The ECONOVA Sustainable Fashion Initiative continued its development. The show saw the release of the “2027 Autumn/Winter Asia Sustainable Fashion Sports Trend Report,” and the China Fashion Color Association, together with several authoritative bodies, introduced a group standard titled “Color Application Specification for Sustainable Fashion Textiles — Part 1: Polyester and Nylon Textiles.” The standard establishes specifications covering material selection, dyeing processes, and recycling labeling, moving sustainable fashion from concept toward enforceable technical benchmarks.

The Outdoor Sustainability Zone, in partnership with the SEE Foundation, featured a circular marketplace, hands-on workshops, and case studies linking industry practice with public welfare initiatives.

At the Mountain Sustainable Development Symposium, participants from government, research institutions, project developers, investors, operators, technology firms, environmental organizations, and brands discussed industry collaboration around safe outdoor recreation and ecological mountain trails. A draft consensus document, “China Outdoor Ecological Mountain Trail Sustainable Development Consensus,” was opened for public comment. The document proposes five core principles: ecological priority, minimal intervention, multi-stakeholder governance, rational use, and benefit reinvestment.

Community Engagement and Industry Forums

Interactive elements gave attendees a participatory role. Climbing walls, cycling culture exhibitions, and pet-friendly zones encouraged hands-on engagement. The Running Shoe Review Zone invited champions and everyday runners to co-create a scene-based shoe evaluation guide, while the ISPO Club 5X5 Challenge connected five themed zones through a course-based format.

Alongside the exhibition, several industry forums addressed topics from consumer trends to operational strategies. The GOIF×ISPO Outdoor Industry Development Forum examined consumption patterns, material innovation, and vertical category ecosystems. The Sports Fashion Trends Forum, in collaboration with industry authorities, released forecasts on functional textiles and sustainable fashion. A separate forum, co-hosted with Data 100, explored how outdoor brands can integrate professional heritage with urban aesthetics to reach segmented consumer groups.

Stakeholder Perspective

“The lightweight material trend is unmistakable — I saw it confirmed firsthand at the show,” said Jeffrey van der Mars, Global Sales Director for Luggage at Thule. “The alignment between what we observed here and our internal R&D direction gives us greater confidence in advancing our product strategy in China and the Asia-Pacific market.”
