Former Nike President brings 30 years of experience, $50B scaling track record, and transformative women’s business expertise

Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ: LULU) today announced that its Board of Directors has unanimously appointed Heidi O’Neill as the company’s next Chief Executive Officer, effective September 8, 2026. O’Neill will also join the company’s Board of Directors and will be based at ’s headquarters in Vancouver, British Columbia.

O’Neill succeeds Calvin McDonald, who departed in January 2026 after eight years at the helm. Since McDonald’s departure, Meghan Frank and André Maestrini have served as interim co-CEOs, and will return to their senior leadership roles upon O’Neill’s arrival, working closely with her to drive the business forward.

A Career Defined by Transformative Brand Building

Heidi O’Neill is one of the most accomplished retail executives of her generation. With more than three decades of industry experience — including over 25 years at Nike, Inc. — she has consistently driven growth at the intersection of product innovation, digital transformation, and consumer-first brand strategy.

O’Neill’s career at Nike reads as a masterclass in scaling a global brand. She joined the company in 1998 as a Marketing Director and rose through the ranks to hold some of the most consequential roles in the organization:

President, Consumer, Product & Brand (2023–2025): In her final role at Nike, O’Neill led the integration of global Men’s, Women’s, and Kids consumer sport teams alongside product innovation, merchandising, and brand and sports marketing. She reset the brand’s foundation, shortened product development cycles by up to 18 months, and prioritized global football and running as growth engines. She also spearheaded the launch of the NikeSKIMS collaboration and the relaunch of the All Conditions Gear (ACG) line.

President, Consumer & Marketplace (2020–2023): She oversaw operations across more than 170 countries, leading the global commercial organization with full P&L responsibility — a role that placed her at the center of Nike’s worldwide go-to-market strategy.

VP/GM, Global Women’s Division (7 years): Perhaps her most defining achievement — O’Neill transformed Nike’s women’s business from a subcategory into a multi-billion-dollar growth engine, tripling revenue and fundamentally reshaping how the world’s largest sportswear brand approached the female consumer.

Nike Direct & Digital Commerce Leadership: As an early champion of digital transformation, O’Neill led the creation of the Nike App and SNKRS platform, built Nike’s membership ecosystem connecting millions of consumers globally, and pioneered the company’s direct-to-consumer evolution — turning Nike Direct into a powerful growth engine.

Throughout her tenure, O’Neill was a central architect of Nike’s expansion from approximately 9 billion in annual revenue to over 50 billion, making it the largest sportswear company on the planet.

Before Nike: A Foundation in Brand Storytelling

O’Neill began her career in advertising at Foote, Cone & Belding, before joining Levi Strauss & Co., where she served as Marketing Director for the Dockers brand. At Dockers, she led a brand repositioning initiative that delivered an 18% increase in unit sales — an early signal of her ability to revitalize established consumer brands through strategic storytelling and market repositioning.

Corporate Governance and Civic Engagement

Beyond her executive career, O’Neill serves on the boards of three publicly traded companies: Spotify Technology, Hyatt Hotels Corporation, and Lithia & Driveway. She was a founding board member of the Nike School Innovation Fund and was invited by the White House to join a roundtable of senior executives focused on public education. She is also actively involved with JoyRx (Children’s Cancer Association) and the Cascade AIDS Project.

Strategic Context: A Pivotal Moment for Lululemon

O’Neill’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for Lululemon. The company has faced slowing North American sales, shifting consumer preferences from fitted to relaxed silhouettes, and heightened competitive pressure. Additionally, the company projects approximately $380 million in tariff-related costs for the current fiscal year, while founder and major shareholder Chip Wilson has publicly pressured the board for governance changes.

Industry analysts see O’Neill’s hire as both a signal of Lululemon’s commitment to product-led growth and a bet on her unique ability to bridge brand heritage with market disruption.

“Heidi is an inspiring leader and a proven, consumer-driven brand strategist with the rare duality of being able to envision a brand’s new future and create the structures and processes to deliver on that vision,” said Marti Morfitt, Executive Chair of Lululemon’s Board of Directors. “The Board conducted an extensive search for our next leader, and we chose Heidi because of the breadth of her experience, her proven success at scaling breakthrough ideas and initiatives, and her ability as a knowledgeable change and growth driver.”

“I am humbled by this opportunity and energized by what the team is building,” said O’Neill. “Lululemon is an iconic brand with rare strengths: genuine guest love, a product ethos centered on innovation, and a global platform that is still in its early chapters. My job will be to build on these foundations — accelerating product breakthroughs, deepening cultural relevance, and unlocking growth in markets around the world.”

Neil Saunders, Managing Director of GlobalData, noted: “O’Neill has a very strong pedigree in the activewear and sporting space, and she knows how the industry works. There will be some who see her as a relatively safe and traditional choice, and there is some merit in that view as Lululemon needs a lot of cultural change to improve its performance. But in our view, O’Neill is her own person with her own agenda for change.”
