The Long Run: How Landice Builds Fitness Equipment That Lasts Decades — An Interview with CEO David Rainis

During my collaboration and exchanges with over the past two years, I’ve had the chance to experience up close the brand’s unique blend of “stubbornness” and human touch. Especially through several interactions with the company’s CEO, David Rainis, I became even more convinced—a business that has navigated the market shifts over nearly six decades must have preserved something truly valuable beneath the noise.

Founded in 1967, Landice has always anchored itself to “durability” and “performance,” rooted in American manufacturing, and served households, gyms, and rehabilitation centers that demand the highest standards of quality. In an era that often chases trends and quick wins, this almost obstinate commitment to the long run has become a rare strength. I often wonder: how does it keep evolving while maintaining that heirloom-like reliability?

That’s why I invited Mr. David Rainis for this , hoping to learn from him the real path Landice has taken to turn time into trust.

5. How is Landice’s sales network structured today in terms of distributors, specialty dealers, direct sales, and online channels? What strategic considerations guide your channel mix?

Landice’s sales network today is structured to reach customers across multiple channels while maintaining a focus on service and quality. We work with specialty dealers and distributors who provide expert guidance, product demonstrations, and after-sales support—key elements in helping customers choose the right equipment. In addition, we have direct sales for both home and commercial customers, allowing us to deliver a personalized experience and maintain close contact with our end users.

Online channels also play an increasingly important role, providing product information, customer support, and convenient purchasing options, though we ensure that our online presence complements rather than replaces the hands-on expertise that defines the Landice experience.

Our channel mix is guided by strategic considerations such as maintaining a high level of service and technical support, ensuring brand integrity, and providing access to the right products for the right customer segments. Ultimately, the goal is to balance convenience and reach with the personalized, knowledgeable support that has been central to Landice’s reputation for nearly six decades.

Engineering Excellence & Quality Management

6. Landice equipment is widely recognized for durability and long lifecycle. What are the most critical engineering principles behind this reputation?

Landice’s reputation for durability and long lifecycle is rooted in a set of core engineering principles that guide every aspect of our design and manufacturing process. First, structural integrity is paramount—we use high-grade materials and robust frame designs to ensure stability, longevity, and consistent performance even under heavy use.

Second, our focus on precision engineering ensures that motors, belts, and moving components operate smoothly and efficiently, reducing wear and minimizing the need for maintenance over time. Advanced cushioning systems are another key principle, providing not only a superior running experience but also protecting both the machine and the user from stress and impact.

Finally, we emphasize quality control and rigorous testing. Every Landice treadmill undergoes extensive testing under real-world conditions before it reaches the customer, so we can guarantee reliability and performance over many years.

7. How does Landice manage product validation — from R&D and prototyping to long-term reliability testing and post-market feedback?

Landice takes a comprehensive, step-by-step approach to product validation to ensure that every piece of equipment meets our high standards for quality, performance, and durability. It begins in R&D, where we develop concepts and designs informed by user needs, dealer feedback and emerging technology trends.

Next comes prototyping, where initial models are built and tested rigorously in controlled environments to evaluate performance, ergonomics, and mechanical reliability. These prototypes undergo long-term reliability testing, simulating years of use to identify any potential issues with motors, frames, belts, cushioning, or electronics before a product ever reaches customers.

Finally, we actively gather post-market feedback from home users, commercial facilities, and rehabilitation centers. This real-world input is analyzed and incorporated into future designs, creating a continuous improvement loop that helps Landice maintain its reputation for longevity and performance.

In short, our validation process combines careful engineering, extensive testing, and real-world feedback to ensure every Landice product delivers on the brand promise of durability, reliability, and superior user experience.

Manufacturing Strategy: U.S. Production & Global Sourcing

8. Landice emphasizes engineering and manufacturing in the United States. What strategic value does domestic production bring to the brand and your customers?

Manufacturing in the United States is central to Landice’s brand identity and strategic approach. Domestic production allows us to maintain strict quality control throughout every stage of engineering and assembly, ensuring that each treadmill meets the high standards our customers expect.

It also enables faster innovation and responsiveness, as our design, engineering, and manufacturing teams are closely integrated. This means we can quickly incorporate new technologies, address issues, and refine products based on real-world feedback.

From the customer perspective, U.S. manufacturing translates into reliability, longevity, and serviceability—machines built to last, with parts and support readily available. Additionally, it reinforces the brand’s commitment to American craftsmanship and creates a tangible sense of trust and value.

9. At the same time, some components or products are customized through Asian suppliers. How do you determine what should remain in-house versus outsourced? And any challenges have you encountered when you outsourcing?

At Landice, we carefully evaluate which components or processes should remain in-house versus outsourced based on a combination of strategic, technical, and quality considerations. Core elements that define our brand—like frame construction, motor engineering, and final assembly—are kept in-house to ensure the highest standards of durability and performance.

Certain specialized components or subassemblies are sourced from trusted Asian suppliers when it allows us to leverage advanced technology, cost efficiencies, or materials expertise that complement our own manufacturing capabilities. In all cases, we maintain strict quality standards and perform rigorous inspections to ensure that outsourced components meet the same expectations as in-house parts.

Outsourcing does come with challenges, including ensuring consistent quality, managing lead times, and maintaining clear communication. To address this, we build strong partnerships with our suppliers, implement robust quality control and integrate their processes closely with our internal teams.

Strategy, Competition & Industry Evolution

10. In today’s highly competitive fitness equipment market, how do you balance preserving Landice’s traditional strengths by adapting to new consumer expectations and industry trends?

Balancing Landice’s traditional strengths with evolving consumer expectations is at the heart of our strategy. Our core strengths—durability, precision engineering, and long-term reliability—remain non-negotiable, as they define the trust our customers have in the brand.

At the same time, we actively adapt to new trends in fitness technology, connectivity, and user experience. This includes integrating advanced consoles, performance tracking, and personalized workout features, as well as responding to growing interest in home fitness and wellness-oriented solutions.

We approach this balance through incremental innovation—enhancing our products with modern features while preserving the craftsmanship and structural integrity that have defined Landice for nearly six decades. The result is equipment that meets the demands of today’s fitness enthusiasts without compromising the qualities that made our brand enduring and respected

11. How do you see the premium cardio and rehabilitation equipment market evolving over the next 3–5 years in US market?

Over the next 3–5 years, we anticipate that the premium cardio and rehabilitation equipment market in the U.S. will continue to grow, driven by several key trends. First, there is increasing demand for home-based, high-quality fitness solutions, as consumers seek professional-grade equipment in their own space. Second, wellness and preventive health are becoming more prominent, which is driving growth in rehabilitation and medical fitness equipment.

Technology will play a larger role, with features like connectivity, performance tracking, and personalized programming becoming standard expectations. At the same time, consumers and facilities will continue to value durability, reliability, and low-maintenance design, which are core strengths of premium brands like Landice.

Future Vision & Product Development

12. Looking ahead, are there new product developments or innovations in the pipeline? If so, in which areas do you see the greatest opportunity to strengthen Landice’s competitive advantage?

Looking ahead, Landice is continuously exploring product developments and innovations that build on our legacy of durability and performance while addressing evolving customer needs. Key areas of focus include advanced connectivity and performance tracking, integrating smart technology to enhance the user experience for both home and commercial customers.

We also see strong opportunities in rehabilitation and wellness-oriented equipment, where precise engineering and controlled motion are critical. Innovations in cushioning systems, motor efficiency, and personalized workout programs are other areas where we can further differentiate ourselves.

Ultimately, the greatest opportunity to strengthen Landice’s competitive advantage lies in combining our core strengths—long-lasting, reliable equipment—with new technologies and features that enhance usability, engagement, and performance, ensuring that our products remain the benchmark for quality and innovation in the premium cardio market.
