China’s sports goods and equipment exports surged to a record $6.469 billion (approximately RMB 400 billion) in the first four months of 2026, with fitness equipment and recreational sports products serving as the core growth engines, according to customs data released this month. The milestone reflects a fundamental transformation underway in China’s fitness manufacturing sector, which is rapidly pivoting from low-cost contract production toward technology-driven, brand-led global competition.

Export Markets: Europe Surges, Emerging Economies Accelerate

The United States remains China’s largest single export destination, accounting for approximately 28% of total sports goods exports. However, Europe has emerged as the fastest-growing region, with exports to the continent rising more than 30% year-on-year during the January–April period.

Emerging markets are posting even more dramatic gains. Latin America led with exceptional momentum: exports of treadmills from Fujian province to the region surged 105% in the first quarter, while shipments from Ningbo port to Brazil jumped 88%. Exports to Mexico and India climbed 38% and 40.4%, respectively. Fujian province alone exported RMB 42.8 billion in sports goods, up 6.9% year-on-year, ranking fifth nationally. Private enterprises drove the expansion, with Fujian-based private exporters recording a 26.6% increase to RMB 24.1 billion — contributing 12.6 percentage points to the province’s overall export growth.

Smart Technology and Brand Building Redefine Global Competition

The export boom is being powered by a decisive shift toward intelligent, high-end fitness equipment. Consumers worldwide increasingly favor devices equipped with virtual coaching, real-time data tracking, and AI-powered training modules. Chinese manufacturers are responding by accelerating their transition from original equipment manufacturing (OEM) to proprietary brand development — a move that is reshaping the competitive dynamics of the global fitness industry.

Ningbo Baist, leveraging its patented pentagonal dip-coated dumbbells, grew exports to Mexico by 220% in the first four months. Kangdun Health reported export sales nearing RMB 80 million, up 36% year-on-year. Ningbo Bofu Electric, a manufacturer of vibration trainers and treadmills, saw its U.S. exports rise nearly 30% to RMB 40 million.

On the strategic front, Shuhua Sports has pioneered a three-dimensional overseas expansion model. The company deployed an integrated intelligent fitness space at the Milan Winter Olympics venue, combining professional cardio training, performance data analysis, sport-specific conditioning, and winter sports simulation into a complete smart solution. Shuhua also renewed its designation as the official fitness equipment supplier for the Chinese Olympic Committee for the 2026–2028 cycle.

“We have evolved from a pure fitness equipment supplier into a service provider capable of delivering complete scientific exercise solutions. This is a fundamental shift in our development positioning,” said Shi Yong, Vice President of Shuhua Sports. “The logic has changed from selling hardware to operating comprehensive health services. We are proving that China’s intelligent manufacturing can compete head-to-head with top international fitness brands.”

Zhang Huanpeng, General Manager of Shuhua Sports’ International Marketing Center, added: “Our AI-powered smart fitness scenarios have drawn significant attention from overseas buyers. With targeted deployment in countries participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, our orders are now booked through October, with sales to the UK, Brazil, and Australia all achieving triple-digit growth.”

Navigating Compliance and Trade Barriers

While growth remains robust, Chinese exporters face increasingly stringent compliance requirements in Western markets. Safety certifications, environmental standards, and evolving technical trade measures in the EU and U.S. demand continuous investment in product testing and regulatory adaptation. Customs authorities have responded with facilitation measures including advance declaration, two-step declaration, and appointment-based clearance, while also guiding enterprises on navigating international trade barriers and the latest certification standards.

From Product Export to Brand Globalization

The global home fitness equipment market is projected to reach $46.5 billion in 2026, growing at a compound annual rate of 6.6%. Chinese enterprises are seizing this structural opportunity by abandoning price-driven competition in favor of a dual-engine strategy combining technological innovation with brand equity. Companies such as Impulse have deployed AI-powered health platforms and smart manufacturing parks that cut research and development cycles by 50%, while simultaneously expanding independent-brand sales in Europe by 28.6% year-on-year.

The trajectory is clear: China’s fitness equipment industry is no longer merely a factory to the world — it is becoming a source of globally competitive brands, powered by artificial intelligence, data intelligence, and end-to-end health solutions.
