There have been eight reported incidents, including two fires and six cases of smoking or melting screens, resulting in at least $6,000 in property damage. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
The CPSC stated that the screen console contains a potential electrical defect that may cause overheating or ignition during extended use. 🏭 Manufacturer Background and Previous Recall
iFIT Health & Fitness, the parent company of NordicTrack, is a globally recognized manufacturer of fitness equipment, with well-known brands including NordicTrack, ProForm, and Freemotion.
According to the CPSC website, the company also issued a recall on July 25, 2024, for 54,400 sets of smart voice-controlled dumbbells (manufactured in Taiwan) due to a potential injury risk from loosening weight selectors. That recall was listed under Recall No. 24-310.
📉 Industry Impact and Analysis
This incident once again highlights the potential safety risks in electronic and thermal design for smart fitness equipment. As features such as touchscreens, connectivity, and voice control become standard in high-end home fitness devices, manufacturers must balance innovation with robust safety measures.
Industry experts note that this recall could push brands to place greater emphasis on thermal testing, UL/IEC electrical safety certifications, and long-term endurance validation. For OEM/ODM factories, it also serves as a reminder of the importance of design responsibility and supply chain compliance management.
